To whom it may concern:

Today’s patient is much more of a consumer and savvy of trends and treatment of their medical conditions. Many patients are also interested in finding alternatives or complementary treatments to their acute or chronic medical conditions. I do often recommend massage therapy treatments to my patients. In today’s world of “type A personalities” and even just day to day stress, massage is an outlet for patients to relax and let go of those personal and work issues for an hour or so and the benefits generally last longer than their appointment time.

Massage therapy has benefits of stress relief, help with anxiety reduction, general aches and pains, and may even lower blood pressure for those with elevated blood pressure. There are some instances where it is recommended for cancer patients or those with an injury-but those should come with direct recommendations from your provider before being seen for massage therapy.

I personally enjoy having a massage regularly and can first hand attest to the health benefits I have received with decreased muscle tension in my neck and low back, and feeling much more relaxed and at peace with myself. It can be the best money ever spent on yourself and is of benefit to almost everyone. These days you may also be able to request a written prescription from your provider for a regular massage and it may count toward use on your health savings account-however, check with your specific work plan benefit.

Sincerely
Kimberly Johnson, ARNP, MSN
